2013

The year 2013 has arrived, and I’m entering the Goodreads.com Reading Challenge, once more. Only this year, I have an extra goal or two threaded into it. In order to save money and restrain my normal acquisitiveness, when it comes to the written word, I will not be buying any books this year. Unless I’m using a gift card for Barnes & Noble, there will be no book purchases for either Kindle or normal books (free Kindle books don’t count).

No, this is not a New Year’s resolution, because those always get broken. This is a flat-out GOAL. I am not even completely certain that I can accomplish it (I’m sure that my family doubts it), but I have been thinking about it and planning for it for some time now. I have tons of books of my own that I have never read. Our local libraries have plenty of them, as well. And my bank account needs a break.

So, for the year 2013, I will be aiming to read 100 books that I own, a relative/friend owns, that I’ve borrowed from the library, or downloaded for FREE to my Kindle. Do you think I can do it? Check back and see.

Update: When I first wrote this, I had no plans to return to school. Now that I’ve returned to Clemson University as an undergraduate in the history department, I am obviously required to buy books. So, I am not disqualifying myself over school book purchases. A few of them, I will be required to read entirely, so they will be added to my list. I haven’t decided whether to make a note of which are school books. But aside from school books, I have held to my goal, and have not bought a single book for myself (even with a gift card!).
